The synthesis and ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of N-phenyl-exo,endo-norbornene-5,6-dicarboximide (PhNDI, 2) were carried out. Quantitative hydrogenation of poly(N-phenyl-exo,endo-norbornene-5,6-dicarboximide)(Poly-PhNDI, 3) at room temperature and 115 bar was achieved by Wilkinson's catalyst. The hydrogenated polymer (Poly-HPhNDI, 4) was sulfonated at room temeprature with acetyl sulfate giving a film-forming, ductile and ion conductive polymer (Poly-SHPhNDI, 5). The electromotive forces of concentration cells in wich sulfonated membranes, prepared from 5, separates hydrochloric solutions of different concentration are studied. The conductivity of the sulfonated membrane equilibrated with water is 4.14 x 10-2 S/m.
